My Message

The greatest threat to an organization isn’t poor communication. It’s the illusion of communication.

The biggest communication failures don’t happen when people are confused. They happen when nobody realizes there’s confusion. Everyone believes the meeting was productive. Everyone believes they’re aligned. Everyone believes they understand.

By then, the misunderstanding has already become costly mistakes, damaged relationships, and lost opportunities.

For decades, we've judged communication by the wrong standard. We've mistaken the appearance of communication for communication itself. A room full of nodding heads doesn't prove shared understanding was ever created.

Communication shouldn't be judged by whether information was exchanged. It should be judged by whether shared understanding was created.

If that's how we define successful communication, then we need a new way to evaluate it.

Every important conversation should end with one question: Did we make misunderstanding impossible?

TEDx Speaker

Charlie has delivered two TEDx Talks—Wanting Equals Self-Motivation and Everyone Is a Performer. He has also organized three TEDx events, coached more than 70 TEDx speakers, and led seven TEDx workshops to help speakers develop compelling TEDx presentations.
